Session 09: Activity 3 – Using the XSLT Workbook

You should try to use this workbook over Easter and put any comments you may have about XSLT by commenting on this post.

In particular you should comment on:

  • what you have  reached in the workbook;
  • any issues that you have with XSLT;

Session 09: Activity 2 – XSLT and XHTML – Creating a table of contents

In this activity you will adapt your own web page to add a table of contents by adapting XSLT stylesheet.

To do this you will:

  • make a copy of your original XML file and change the stylesheet reference to a new one;
  • modify XSLT stylesheet to display a table of contents and save it under the new name;
  • modify it again to produce the anchors in the text;
  • modify your XML file to ensure that the technique works with additional content;
  • comment on this blog post to say what you have learned;

Session 09: Activity 1 – XSLT and XHTML – Headers and Footers

In this activity you will produce your own web page formatted with XSLT by:

  • writing a simple XHTML page like mine;
  • converting it to XML by changing the file extension and some of the headers;
  • setting up a simple XSLT stylesheet which will display it;
  • adding a header and footer to your page;
  • commenting on this post to say what you learnt from doing this activity;

Session 08: Applying different style sheets

  • Plan the design of a web page with links [It may be an adaptation of an earlier page];
  • Work out what XML styles you will need to produce this page;
  • Write the page in XML;
  • Develop a CSS to style your XML;
  • Put the two together and produce the styled web page;
  • Design further CSS to style the same XML differently;
  • Comment here on what you have learnt as a consequence of doing this activity.

Preparing for your assignment

Please comment on this post by giving the following information about your assignment for this module:

  • the three “audiences” you are going to have for your web site;
  • the characteristics of these audiences that will affect the design of your site;
  • an of outline the three different designs that you will need;
  • an explanation of why they must be designed that way;

These need only be rough ideas at this stage but I need the information so that I can judge that your ideas have the potential to achieve at least a pass grade in the assignment.

Session 05 Activity 02

You are asked to design a home page for your site using CSS columns to define the layout.

  • rough out a design using a storyboard;
  • work out the CSS for your columns;
  • write the html and the CSS and put them together;
  • publish your home page in the presentation area of WebCT for others to see and explain how you produced your design;
  • report by commenting on this post describing and discussing your pages(s);
  • add a link to the examples in the presentation area;
